"In 10 days you will see a difference, in 20 days you will feel a difference and in 30 days, you will have a whole new body." - Joseph Pilates

Joseph Pilates, a German-born gymnast developed the exercise format, now known as Pilates, during the first World War. Because this discipline uses the mind to control the muscles, Joseph Pilates referred to it as contrology. He believed in the close correlation between physical and mental health and recommended his exercise program as rehabilitation for veterans.

The Pilates Principles were established to condition the entire body including core muscle strengthening, centering, control, precision, breathing and alignment. This program helps the participant to strengthen muscles without adding bulk as you would in many other sports training programs. It also improves energy, posture, mind body awareness, coordination and balance.

Pilates is beneficial to participants at all levels of physical fitness and ability. It is a good training program for other physical activity, and because of its low-impact nature, it is a preferred exercise for sufferers of chronic pain who are looking to strengthen abdomen and back muscles without stressing the joints.

The JCC of St. Louis offers training on the Pilates Reformer. The Reformer is a state-of-the-art apparatus designed to add resistance in conjunction with Pilates strengthening.
