Young Adults & Families
From young singles to couples of all ages, male and female,
and for people to all backgrounds, the JCC has something for everyone. Our
staff encourages member input, beyond just program participation. For every
program that is planned or service that is provided, lay leaders and JCC
members and non-members alike have assisted through our committee process,
individual feedback and other experiences. From fitness to theatre, aquatics to
social services and Jewish culture to family fun, the JCC has something for
everyone!
Helene Mirowitz
Department of Jewish Community Life
Young singles (20s and 30s) have the chance to become a part
of the larger St. Louis Jewish community with
the newly created St. Louis GesherCity.
This is an area for local young Jewish adults to find others with the same
interests and participate in social activities and dive into social action
ventures and everything in between.
We also offer the opportunity to explore your Jewish
heritage and values through the lifecycle. This starts with the Aleph Bet of
Marriage, a workshop for engaged and newlywed couples, The Mothers Circle,
which aids in raising children Jewish when one of the parents is not Jewish to our
Super Sundays of Jewish Learning which explores Judaism in several ways. Other
exciting programs include our annual Women’s Shabbat Retreat, Mom’s Night Out
and setting up a chance to speak with our own Rabbi Brad Horwitz about Jewish
Learning. If just getting the kids out for a great time in the spring is what your seeking, then Tour de Fun is a must. It's a kids playland with arts and crafts, inflatable rides, animals, large cars and trucks to explore.

Messing Cultural Arts and Education Department
Opportunities for involvement in cultural arts abound in our
annual festivals. We also host the New Jewish Theatre, recipient of two Kevin
Kline theatre awards (awards for local theatre companies for outstanding
performances in several categories). The St.
Louis Jewish Book Festival is held annually in the late fall and has seen such
authors/actors as William Shatner, Lily Tomlin and Fran Drescher appear as the
keynote speaker. The Jewish Film Festival happens every June and provides the
chance for the community to view more than 15 movies presenting a look at
Judaism in various ways and in several circumstances. Another popular week is
our annual Used Book Sale, where tens of thousands of books are available for
sale for a week in October, and preceded by a summer one day only used book
sale in June.
J Associates
The J Associates volunteers work to assistance in the
advancement of the JCC through fundraising efforts for scholarships, programs,
equipment and supplies. They have had an effect in several areas of the J, from
infants to the frail elderly. Creative programs J Associate members participate
in include winery and museum trips, gourmet cooking and visiting state parks
and local hot spots. Fundraisers are held during the year where the money is
raised to support the JCC programs.
Sports, Recreation
& Aquatics
In the world of fitness, adults of all ages have several
opportunities at their fingertips. If you decide to it’s time to begin
fulfilling that New Year’s resolution, schedule your free assessment with a
certified personal trainer. After completing the assessment, you can begin
personal training in either of our fitness centers, work with a certified personal trainer or
participate in any of our specialty fitness classes (Yoga, Pilates and Spin) and group exercise classes. Along with Yoga, Pilates and Spin classes, several group exercise classes, including
TurboKick, Cardio Pump, 20/20/20 and Flex Strength to name just a few. If a
little more assistance is what you’re seeking we also have Nutrition Coaching
available and Assisted Stretching and Learn and Burn for woman, combining the
best of fitness with Jewish learning. Our group exercise class schedules change quarterly,
so there’s always something new and fresh to keep you excited about heading to
the gym!
For the weekend warrior athletes, our adult sports
programming features basketball, racquetball and volleyball year-round. When
spring hits so do our several coed softball leagues and traditional Sunday
Men’s Softball Doubleheader League. For those just looking to hit the courts,
our membership has 15 racquetball courts at their disposal as well as three
international size squash courts. There’s never a day that goes by without a
racquetball or handball match on one of our courts. We also offer special
sports/fitness events including our annual 5K and 10K Labor Day Run and the now
annual Indoor Triathlon every February.
If fitness in the pool is your preference, aquatics is the place to be. We have our Swim
Israel club. It’s designed to push you to swim the length of Israel
over a
full year and we’ll even help you keep track. We’ve also created a new Adult
Swim Meet so all your training can create bragging rights should you choose to
accept the challenge. And if fitness in an aerobics studio isn’t your thing,
head to the pool. Water group exercise classes (Wohl Building and Fox Building) include Aqua Energized,
Wet Sweat, Cardio Aqua Firming, Arthritis Foundation Warm Water Exercise and
more. There are also always lap lanes available for the swimmer just looking
for that great workout.
Attending Camp Hawthorn (now Camp Sabra) is one of my fondest childhood memories. It shaped who I am today. I learned how to get along with others, never give up, be responsible and embrace my Jewish identity. I loved it so much I vowed to send my kids someday.
