The JCC School of Swim is our very popular swim lesson program for children of six months to adults looking to refine strokes for fitness or competitive purposes. Classes are offered several times a week at multiple levels. Please check out the links on the left to see which building and class is right for you! And we'll see you in the pool!
Level Descriptions
Please check the prerequisites to determine the appropriate level for your child.
Parent/Child (6 months-3 years):
This class is an introduction to the water in which the parent and child participate together. Skills taught will aid the child in becoming comfortable in the water and will help the child to learn skills more easily as he or she progresses through the swim program.
Level I: ( Aleph) Introduction to Water Skills
Children work to gain confidence and submerge face in water. Learn assisted floating and kicking. There is no prerequisite for this level.
Level II: (Bet) Fundamental Aquatic Skills
This level places emphasis on unassisted floating and swimming on front and back. Prerequisite: Participants should be able to bob five times to chin level, enter and exit the water safely without assistance and be comfortable placing face under water.
Level III: (Gimel) Stroke Development
Level III will further coordinate front and back crawl strokes, while introducing diving, treading water and the butterfly kick. Prerequisite: Unassisted transition to front and back float for fiive seconds, unassisted push off and swim for 15 feet using a combination of leg and arm action on front and back.
Level IV: (Dalet) Stroke Improvement
To develop confidence and endurance in skills and strokes already learned and introduce the breaststroke, sidestroke and open turns. Prerequisite: Swim front crawl 15 yards using rhythmic breathing (to the side), tread water for 30 seconds and return using back crawl 15 yards.
Level V: (Hey) Stroke Refinement
Participants receive continuous development, refinement and endurance for strokes. Introducing flip turns and surface dives. Prerequisite: Must be able to swim a skills assessment consisting of a combination of front crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and back crawl for 75-100 yards.
Level VI: (Vov) Fitness Swimmer
One of three components of Level VI, along with Diving and Lifeguard Readiness, Fitness Swimmer works to improve endurance as well as teaches competitive turns and the benefits of fitness swimming. Prerequisite: Must be able to swim a skills assessment consisting of a combination of front crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and back crawl for 150 yards.
I truly enjoyed the Maccabi Games experience. My host family was so helpful and nice and we got along great! I enjoyed meeting and competing with athletes from all over the world. I loved being with all Jewish teens—the feeling of everyone celebrating Judaism was great.
