Publications

B’nai B’rith

B'nai B'rith, the global voice of the Jewish community, is the oldest and most widely known Jewish humanitarian, human rights, and advocacy organization. Since 1843, B'nai B'rith has worked for Jewish unity, security, continuity, and tolerance. Missouri Lodge #22 was chartered in 1855 and continues to serve St. Louis through cultural, educational, philanthropic, service, and social programs.

For 155 years, B’nai B’rith has served the St. Louis community, providing programs and services which have impacted individuals both Jewish and non.  Committed to the international organization’s mission of community service and social action, lodge members have planned events for youth in need, the homeless and disenfranchised, residents of elder care facilities, and offered both financial and physical support to a host of Jewish agencies.

Through “Guardian of the Menorah” dinners and other special events, members have raised funds for the agencies within the B’nai B’rith Family - the Anti Defamation League (ADL), the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization (BBYO), Covenant House, and Hillel - and historically have been active members on the boards of these organizations.

Collectively the lodges/units which now comprise what is commonly referred to as B’nai B’rith St. Louis have led the country in implementing new programs, as St. Louis has served as the Pilot City for a national membership campaign and “B’nai B’rith Cares for Kids”, as well as the site for the BBI Young Leadership Action Network (YLAN) training conference.  We were in the forefront of building senior housing (Covenant Houses I and II and Chai) and  were selected in 1994 to host a forum to generate recommendations for the White House Conference on Aging.  More recently, we facilitated an "Aging in Place" symposium in partnership with BBI, which was attended by more than 100 individuals.

When Missouri was devastated by the Midwest floods of 1993, B’nai B’rith St. Louis conceived and implemented “Campaign Clean-Up”, and with funding from both local donors and BBI, purchased and delivered $125,000 worth of cleaning supplies directly to flood affected communities.

B’nai B’rith St. Louis continues to be an active organization within the community, annually organizing “Unto Every Person There is a Name” - reading the names of those whose lives were lost in the Holocaust - for the community-wide Yom HaShaoh  memorial observance; participating in the St. Louis Jewish Film Festival and St. Louis Jewish Book festival;  and delivering an average of 500 “buddy bears” to children in hospitals and care facilities for “B’nai B’rith Cares for Kids ~ David and Betty Blumenthal Community Service Project”.  We support the Jewish Food Pantry through canned food collections, as well as Ronald McDonald House with our holiday toy drive.  Missouri Lodge members meet bi-monthly for a Kosher meal and program, and the Executive Council meets on alternate months.

Our December DecaDANCE attracts over one hundred guests; other annual activities include a bonfire/hayride to celebrate Sukkot, ethnic dining club excursions, team trivia, and holiday gift wrapping at Borders Bookstore to raise money for “B’nai B’rith Cares for Kids”.

Youth Theatre

Calling All Budding Actors & Actresses!

Ever wonder what it’s like to perform in front of an audience? Want to learn the process of character development? Theatre builds self-confidence, presentation skills and promotes art and culture collaboration. No previous experience is needed.

Take a Walk on the Wild Side with Theatre!
Theatre is about taking risks. It is the wild notion of putting oneself out there to entertain a crowd of strangers. Often a child’s first acting experience is pretending to be an animal. Whether it’s imitating the sound of a lion or running around on all fours like a puppy, there’s no denying the fun of imitating furry friends. So many stories personify animals, allowing us to show compassion for them but also empathize with their human qualities. Imitating the traits of animals serves as a great introduction to acting for children of all ages.

This season, the J’s Youth Theatre allows students from Kindergarten to ninth grade to tell stories of animals, both new and old. Rumpus in the Rainforest teaches determination and preserving nature; the classic Story of Velveteen Rabbit shows if you love something enough, it becomes real and the award-winning musical Honk, Jr., based on The Ugly Duckling, exemplifies the meaning of true beauty with modern music and twists.

For more information, questions or concerns, please contact Cindy Lewis, Youth Theatre Coordinator, 314-442-3239.
We hope to see you in the spotlight!

The Rumpus in the Rainforest
By Ron Fink and John Heath

Give your little one the opportunity to ‘monkey around’ and ‘take a walk on the wild side’ this spring with theatre! The Rumpus in the Rainforest is a perfect introduction to musical theatre and teaches the importance of the rainforest through fun songs, dances and zany characters. Frog in the rainforest desperately wants to get off the jungle floor and see the sky – but who will help him climb above the canopy? The Jaguar loves the jungle floor, the Sloth family keeps falling asleep, and the Howler Monkeys have gone nuts. The Boas offer to slither up a tree, but can you really ever trust a boa? Meanwhile, two bungling explorers stumble by in search of the Lost Ancient City of Chocolate. Full of forest fun, this elementary musical will teach your budding actor the basics of theatre and conclude with an adorably entertaining show! Rehearsal times subject to change as play approaches. Honk! Jr.
Book by Anthony Drewe
Music by George Stiles
Lyrics by Anthony Drewe
Produced by special arrangement with Music Theatre International

This contemporary retelling of the classic story The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen is about an awkward duck whose gawky looks instantly incite prejudice from his family and neighbors. Separated from the farm and pursued by a hungry cat, Ugly must fi nd his way home. Along his rollicking and harrowing journey, he not  only discovers his true beauty and glorious destiny but also fi nds love and acceptance in all its forms.

A modern tale with fashionable costumes (no feathers or fur necessary)! Honk Jr. is stuffed with hilarious lines and catchy numbers that won the show an Olivier Award (the British equivalent of the Tony® Award) for Best New Musical. Now adapted for young performers, this show will give your child a theatre experience they will never forget! No previous experience needed, and all who audition are cast. Early Childhood Center

Nurturing the Mind, Body and Soul

Embracing Your Child's Development

The J's Early Childhood Center mission, in partnership with our families, is to provide quality care and education that embraces the development of children's mind, body, and soul.  We stimulate the minds of young children through an innovative and individualized curriculum implemented by a well-trained staff in a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate environment.  Music education and science are just a small part of the daily experiences your child will receive.  Your child's body will develop and grow at its own pace but it's the nurturing and attention to adopt a healthy lifestyle, personal hygiene and play habits that differentiates the J's program from the others in St. Louis.  Physical education programming utilizes the best of the J's resources in fitness, recreation, and aquatics.  The soul is nurtured through living Jewish values and experiences in an environment that appreciates and respects the diversity of the children and their families participating in our program.

The Basics...

  • Year-round care for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years
  • Two locations - Marilyn Fox Building in Chesterfield and the Staenberg Family Complex in Creve Coeur
  • Mondays – Fridays, 7:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Full-time, part-time and combination schedules available
  • Learning environment characterized with art, science, math, language/reading development, music and movement every day in every classroom.
  • Accredited by Missouri Voluntary Accreditation program and licensed by the State of Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services
  • Character-development, value-driven programming

You Belong Here...

Our children benefit developmentally by being part of the Jewish Community Center which gives them access to state-of-the-art facilities and programs not found in other early childhood environments.  Our children take advantage of:

  • Sports and recreation programs that give children structured Physical Education classes
  • Swimming (age appropriate)
  • Summer camps -- children get to explore the outdoors in the summer months, learning songs and other camp rituals such as flagpole
  • Music -- every day, children sing together learning songs
  • Intergenerational programming with adults in our Adult Day Center

Jewish Programming

The Early Childhood Center presents a year-round curriculum that teaches children Jewish stories, songs and celebrations. The wonderful smells of Jewish holiday cooking, songs of Shabbat, and the symbols and images of Jewish life fill the air. A strong emphasis is put on weaving Jewish values of friendship, respect and tzedakah/charity into the daily life of each classroom. To allow parents the opportunity to participate in programs with their children, celebrations are often held at lunchtime and early evenings. Our Judaic Learning Environment include:

  • Weekly Shabbat Celebrations
  • Jewish Holiday Celebrations
  • Family Judaic Programs
  • Programs on Jewish Values

Our Staff

No other early childroom center in St. Louis can match our combination of caring, experience, dedication and expertise.  We start with enthusiastic teachers - many of whom have been with us for over 10 years and are degreed and/or have their CDA (Child Development Associates) National Certification - who love children and love to teach; then we provide them with extensive training and continuing education.  This reflects an on-going strong commitment to excellence in child care and early childhood education and to ensuring the health, safety and protection of each child.

A Program for Every Child

Choose the camping experience that is right for your child. With a variety of camp offerings, ranging from a traditional outdoor camp to sports and arts camps, each camper will spend a fun-filled summer making new friends, building self esteem and creating life long memories. Each of our camps incorporates Jewish values and tradition in its programming.

Two Locations - Twice the Fun

The J's Summer Camp Experience is very unique because there are two locations in the St. Louis area – one in the Creve Coeur area and one in Chesterfield. Each camp setting has different attributes that provide for a fun filled and enjoyable outdoor summer experience.

Creve Coeur - Staenberg Family Complex

Campers here enjoy one of the last preserved campgrounds in the area. With over 40 acres of wooded trails, huge outdoor fields for sports and other activities, one of the area’s largest outdoor pool, and a new state of the art camp pavilion the facilities at the Millstone Campus provide a true outdoor camping experience. See the complete listing.

Chesterfield - Marilyn Fox Building

Sitting on 11 acres in Chesterfield, campers have access to state of the art facilities including the area’s Aqua Climb® wall. From the arts and crafts room and the new jGame Zone to a double court gymnasium, outdoor sports fields and Grand Slam batting cages, campers will enjoy spending their summer making memories and friends at this location. See the complete listing.

Success Stories

Our certified personal trainers are tops in the field and have helped many individuals with weight loss, health and performance goals. Between our two locations, the J has 20 trainers with the combined education of 24 bachelor and master degrees, 42 national certifications and 219 years of experience. Our personal training staff works with everyday people to understand their individual needs and develops the most effective plan to help them reach their health and fitness goals. Trainers are committed to your success. The proof of their dedication and the quality of their work is in the success seen by so many who have worked one-on-one with our nationally certified trainers.

"Look at me now!"
JCC staff member, Linda Gatton, age 56, never exercised before starting to train at the J. Feeling the effects from a sedentary occupation of working in a busy accounting department and living a sedentary lifestyle, Linda decided to that it was time to take advantage of the fitness center…just seconds down the hallway from her workspace. Linda quickly turned things around. She enjoys the exercise so much that she trains with a trainer twice a week and works out at least three other days on her own. Early in the program Linda learned it would take 3500 calories of expenditure or deficit (from less food intake) to lose one pound of fat. Immediately, the math of monitoring calories in and out was perfectly suited for someone in accounting. Linda began to understand that any extra calories from “unplanned” snacks or meals could be detrimental to reaching her goals. She still enjoys certain foods for special occasion; however, she’s learned to reduce the portions to stay on top of her calorie “deficit.” Linda has also been influential for her office-mates as she now encourages everyone to bring fruit and veggie plates for office treats. Overall Linda has lost 33 pounds and is more vibrant with energy and confidence since she found the fitness center.

"I'm strong and so are my bones!"
JCC member, Sandra Sokolik age 68, was diagnosed with osteoporosis at the severe risk level and was unable to take medications due to stomach discomfort. Sandra began working with a JCC certified personal trainer to help improve her bone density through exercise. After several weeks of working with weights and on her fitness, her osteoporosis has reversed to the stage of osteopenia. Her workouts include an intense focus on posture. Now, Sandra is self-motivated, but continues to train with her trainer once every few weeks for workout updates.

"I feel great!"
JCC member Sharon Taylor, age 56, lost 12 ½ inches and 15 pounds within six weeks of working with Brettany Hayes, a JCC certified personal trainer. To get a jump start on her goals, she decided it was worthwhile to train three days per week. Sharon altered her eating habits by incorporating more structure to her meal plans to control portions and calorie intake. During her workouts, she performs a combination of weight training and cardio. Additionally, she strives to stay active on her own, including taking yoga. To keep the exercise interesting and useful for Sharon, Brettany incorporates many concepts related to balance, body control and posture so that the exercise compliments her participation and enjoyment in yoga.

Arts and Cultural Center

Bravo!  Expect Great Performances!

The JCC has a rich tradition in bringing Jewish cultural opportunities to its members and the St. Louis community. In maintaining that long standing tradition, the focus of the Roswell and Wilma Messing Cultural Arts Department has been on theatre, film and literature.

  • The St. Louis Jewish Book Festival allows prominent authors to showcase their latest works and lets the readers get up close and personal.
  • Our New Jewish Theatre has won six Kevin Kline Awards (recognizing outstanding achievement in Professional Theatre in the Greater St. Louis area) since the inception of the Awards program five years ago -- capturing many high honor awards such as Outstanding Actress, Outstanding Supporting Actor and Outstanding Director of a Play. This program produces a full season of five shows annually.
  • The St. Louis Jewish Film Festival brings poignant films and filmmakers, as they relate to Jewish values, culture and/or history and is a largely attended event.
  • The J's Youth Theatre program introduces the fun of performing in front of a live audience while teaching St. Louis children all about drama, costuming and theatrics.
  • Theatre Unlimited, a program designed for adults with disabilties, has brought the excitement of theatrical performing to life!  Participants act, sing, dance and shine on Center Stage, all in a barrier-free setting.
  • Two Used Book Sales take place each year, offering more than 30,000 books to the community.
  • Culture Club, a committee of dedicated community members looking to enhance current offerings and find new ways to promote the arts.

What Is An RSS Feed?

About Feeds

Our website has links labeled "RSS".  This is a way of saying that you can find out about updates to the J's site without having to visit the site in your web browser.

This feature is referred to as "syndication" or "aggregation". Sometimes it's just called subscribing. And these days, instead of one of these words, lots of sites will use a little orange button. The standard one looks like this:  RSS button

This buttons means: The site you're viewing has a feed available.

We've provided a little bit of information here on how you can get easily get started reading feeds for free. We'll also tell you how you can publish a feed of your own, if you'd like.

What Do I Need?

Just like when you want to watch a video clip or listen to music on the web, you need a "player" of some kind to subscribe to feeds. Good news: Most of these tools are free, and there are many to choose from, so you can find the one that best suits you.

The "player" for a feed is called a feed reader. This tool lets you subscribe to any feeds you want, checks automatically to see when they're updated, and then displays the updates for you as they arrive.

Feed readers can run on your computer or you can sign up to use a feed-reader that runs on the web. If you use one of the web-based readers, you can access your feeds from anywhere you go, just by signing into the website that manages your feeds. If you use a feed reading program that installs on your computer, your feeds can be stored for you even if you're not connected to the Internet.

What Feed Reader Should I Use?

Here's a list some of the most popular tools people have told us they like.

On the web: If you don't want to have to install a program, many people choose My Yahoo!, Google Personalized Homepage, My MSN, or My AOL to read feeds right within the home page that their browser starts in. Other providers of web-based feed readers include Bloglines or NewsGator Online. All of the web-based services are free. Also free is our own service, LiveJournal, which is a blogging community that also lets you read feeds on your friends page.

On your computer: If you want a feed reading program that runs on your own computer, there are a few options. Anyone using the Mozilla Firefox web browser has support for feeds built-in, and Microsoft Windows users have support for feeds in Internet Explorer 7. Apple Macintosh users can also use the built-in support for feeds in the Safari web browser.

If you want a separate program to read feeds, you can use FeedDemon or NewsGator for Microsoft Outlook if you're on Microsoft Windows. Both tools let you switch between these programs and the web-based reader at any time. If you're on a Macintosh running OS X, the most popular feed reader is NetNewsWire, which can also connect to the web-based services.

Subscribing to the J's Feed

Once you've got a tool to read feeds, you'll want to find some feeds worth reading. Many of the tools listed above provide some built-in feeds to get you started. Then, as you visit other sites on the web, you can keep your eyes open for links that say XML or RSS or Syndication, or for that orange button up above, and add the feeds you find interesting.

Naturally, we think you should check out the J's feed, too. It's called the J Event Feed (link to), and it offers up-to-date information from our calendar.

Supporting Partners

Without Their Support

The J would not be able to positively impact the St. Louis Community the way we have for 129 years (and counting!) without the generous support of our donors. We thank these organizations for the many ways they enhance the J.

J Associates

Building Lifelong Friendships!

The J Associates is a support auxiliary of the Jewish Community Center of St. Louis. Working and socializing together, and helping those in need builds lifelong friendships and support groups that have become a trade mark of the J Associates organization. With the dedication and commitment of over 550 members, the J Associates continue to make a difference in the lives of so many.

Part of the mission of this dynamic organization is to raise money, which is then allocated annually to departments at the JCC.  These departments then use the funds for scholarships and programs. Touching all ages from infants to the frail elderly, the J Associates have contributed to important programs such as Home Delivered Meals and Theatre Unlimited for adults with special needs; scholarships allowing children to attend camps and early childhood services.

Where It All started!

Beginning in 1985 as a small group of caring women who saw a need for volunteer help at the JCC gift shop, the J Associates has grown to an organization of more than 500 members who have allocated nearly one million dollars! The J Associates members have a wonderful time, combining social activities and raising money to help others while building camaraderie and making new contacts and friends. Through exciting events such as Dancing in the Loop, Toast of the Town and BBB, events at St. Louis' hottest locations and dynamic speakers, the members of J Associates are a diverse group who give back to the St. Louis community.

Give to the Bess and Max Broder J Associates Tribute Fund

Bess and Max Broder met at a dance more than 71 years ago at the YMHA, the predecessor of the J. That was a beginning of many decades and 3 generations of involvement at the J for the Broder / Potashnick families. Activities at the J that were significant to family members included Camp Hawthorn, Camp Sabra, day camps, sports, BBYO and J Associates. Upon the passing of Bess and Max Broder, their children, Barry, Bruce and Bobbi Potashnick created the Bess and Max Broder J Associates Endowment Fund that is designated to be dispersed to the annual allocations of J Associates. The family felt that J Associates was the best instrument to distribute funds to multiple significant programs throughout the J. The family is proud to be the first and only J Associates Endowment Fund.

Annual Giving

Millstone Society
With your pledge of $1,000 or more, you can join the Millstone Society, a group of visionary leaders who work together in support of the continued growth and strength of programs benefiting the St. Louis Jewish and general communities.

The Millstone Society reflects the tradition of giving inspired by legendary community leader I.E. Millstone, who established the St. Louis Jewish Community Center campus and served two terms as The J Board Chair. The Millstone Society recognizes the highest level of commitment in support of The J and its many programs. Your gift goes to support programs, sponsorships, fundraising events, membership and the earnings from a donor’s endowment fund at The J.

The Jewish Community Center of St. Louis is pleased to honor and pay tribute to the visionary group of individuals, families and organizations whose belief in the importance of family, Jewish culture, community and philanthropy are demonstrated through their extraordinary support.

  • A $1,000 contribution can pay for a scholarship for a summer day camper.
  • A $2,500 donation can pay for Shabbat enrichment activities for preschoolers and their families.
  • A $5,000 gift can pay for a child with developmental disabilities to receive the extra support necessary to attend summer camp.
  • A $10,000 contribution can pay for one year of services for an Adult Day Center participant.

Staenberg Society
With your pledge of $500 - $999, those ages 45 or under can join the Staenberg Society, which honors the support of our community’s future leaders. Inspired by Michael Staenberg who has spent many years mentoring many of St. Louis’ young adults, The Staenberg Society instills the importance of philanthropy to the next generation of donors.

The Jewish Community Center of St. Louis is pleased to honor and pay tribute to the visionary group of individuals, families and organizations whose belief in the importance of family, Jewish culture, community and philanthropy are demonstrated through their extraordinary support.

  • A $500 donation covers the cost of an inclusion counselor for one week of day camp plus post-care for one child with a developmental disability.
  • A $750 gift supports a one month scholarship for an infant in the Early Childhood Center
  • A $999 contribution sponsors six months of home-delivered kosher meals five days per week to a frail senior adult, so they may remain in their homes

Employee Matching Gifts
Many businesses match their employees’ gift contributions, which can double or even triple your contribution.

Gifts of Stock
A gift of appreciated stock held for more than one year can benefit The J while saving capital gains taxes and offering you other tax benefits. Please consult your tax advisor to learn how a gift of stock can assist you in reaching your personal financial goals.

Tributes

Giving to The J is a way to honor someone special, celebrate an occasion or milestone, or memorialize a loved one or friend. We will be happy to send notification of the gift to your designee without disclosing the amount of the gift.

You can make a tribute to any programming area fund you in which you have a special interest. A tribute is a special way to honor the memory of a loved one, mark a special occasion, or celebrate a special achievement.

Legacy Giving

The passing of our values from one generation to the next is one of the most fundamental tenants of Judaism. We lead by example. We teach. We tell stories that reflect our values. And we give. Leaving a Legacy Gift to the J allows you to ensure that those who come after you will have the opportunity for the same enriching experiences you’ve had, and allows you to share your values directly with the next generation.

There are a wide variety of ways that you can make a tax-advantaged planned gift to The J, which meet your short and long-term philanthropic goals.

Sponsorship Opportunities and Foundation Support

Individuals/Foundations/Corporations looking to find a way to give back to their communities know that
The J is a great community partner.

Sponsorship of J events and programs is a compelling way to:

  • Reach a large audience
  • Drive traffic to your business
  • Support the community
  • Create volunteer opportunities for your employees which can serve as team-building opportunities

We will work with you to create an exciting, customized sponsorship package for your organization.

"This is just a note to thank you and your staff for a wonderful evening.  In a combined event, we celebrated our son's high school graduation and our 25th wedding anniversary at the Chesterfield facility.  Our friends and family are still talking about it!  They were all impressed by the spaciousness and comfort of the facility.  They especially commented on the friendly staff.  You and your team made our plans come to life.  You offered suggestions about things I did not even think about.  That you anticipated our needs was really impressive. Such life events come only once and you helped make the celebration memorable.  It was a pleasure to share the "J" with our guests."

The J provides the perfect place for your child to have his/her next birthday party...all you have to do is provide the guests!  The J's expert sports and recreation staff will work with you to provide the sports-themed party of your child's dreams.  Here's a sampling of the more popular parties we've put together:

Parties at the Pool -- Indoor or Outdoor!

Make a splash at your birthday party by holding it at one of the J’s many pools! You get time to swim and can have fun with water games and toys, all supervised by an aquatics staff member… and then you get a party room! Sing Happy Birthday, get messy with cake and ice cream and laugh ‘til it hurts! Parties must be reserved a  minimum two weeks in advance with a $75 non-refundable deposit.

Batting Cage Birthday Parties

If baseball is your child's favorite thing, then why not let him take a swing on his birthday?!  The JCC batting cages at the Marilyn Fox Building in Chesterfield provide the perfect opportunity to let your little slugger, boys and girls, to take their hacks in the batting cages.  The kids will get one hour in the cages either hitting and/or pitching and wear themselves out just in time to head to a party room for cake and ice cream.  Our batting cages are open year round and birthday parties are available for kids six through 12 years old.  Available at the Marilyn Fox Building only.
